Twenty-seven percent of adults have sent a text message on a cell phone while driving a car, according to PC Magazine. The statistic is based on a survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which found that nearly half of all the adults who text do so in their vehicles.

Pew also found that the following percentages of people say they text and drive:

  • 29 percent of baby boomers (ages 46-64)
  • 50 percent of Gen Xers (ages 34-45)
  • 59 percent of Millennials (ages 18-33)
  • 34 percent of teens (ages 16-17)

“Overall, 44% of adults say they have been passengers of drivers who used the cell phone in a way that put themselves or others in danger,” according to the Pew Internet report.

More people talk on the phone while driving: 73 percent of boomers have had a cell phone conversation in the driver’s seat, compared with 86 percent of Gen Xers, 80 percent of Millennials, and 50 percent of adults age 65 or better.
