Wisconsin’s Better Business Bureau says complaints about fitness clubs have increased by more than 90 percent in the last five years, according to WGBA-TV in Green Bay/Appleton.
Viewers had complained to the station about the sudden closing of a fitness club in Neenah and the previous closing of L.A. Weight Loss in northeastern Wisconsin.
Those who do plan to join a gym should keep in mind the Better Business Bureau’s recommendations:
- Read the find print of your gym contract.
- Agree to pay a monthly fee rather than an annual fee.
- Closely review bank statements to make sure you’re being charged the correct amount.
MSN.com offers some additional tips on how to get out of a gym contract, should you decide it’s not “working out” for you:
- Know your state’s laws. Most states give you three days to change your mind after signing a contract or allow you to cancel an agreement if you move a certain distance from your club or become incapacitated for a prolonged period.
- Cancel in writing. Give 30 days notice, if possible, and keep a copy of the letter.
- Don’t try to end the agreement or avoid paying on your gym membership by closing your bank account or canceling your credit card – such a move will only invite debt collectors.
